The Lucky 8
On December 9th of 2023, 50 weanlings arrived at the Bowie Kill Pen in Texas.
These 50 babies were from an Indian reservation somewhere in Arizona. We don’t understand why they are rounding up babies for slaughter. Our best guess is overpopulation caused by a lack of birth control.
When the babies arrived, they were tagged for “direct ship” to slaughter in Mexico. They weren’t even given a chance at the auction.
The Saving Gracie Foundation worked together with two other rescue organizations to get these babies saved from certain death. All Seated in a Barn and Moon Mountain Sanctuary helped us to rescue 8 of those babies.
We call them the Lucky 8. Their names are Cheyenne, Rosebud, Mezcal, Cochise, Koda, Sequoia, Kai, and Wynonah. Today, the Lucky 8 have been hard at work learning some manners and how to be a good crew of horses. We are so proud of them.
